Groote Post has had an excellent year with their Kapokberg Chardonnay 2017 which has been honoured with excellent ratings, both locally and internationally.

Prescient Chardonnay Report 2018
Winemag.co.za, in association with financial services company Prescient, announced the top Chardonnays - from a record number of 117 entries - at a celebratory sundowner event at the Norval Foundation in Cape Town on Tuesday, 16 October. The report, which is compiled by SA wine critic Christian Eedes and his panel of expert wine judges, highlights two key facts: South Africa’s ability to produce exceptional Chardonnays across multiple regions and the category’s continuing increase in quality. Lukas Wentzel, Groote Post’s long-time winemaker was delighted to be at the event to receive Groote Post’s award for a 92-point rating for their Kapokberg Chardonnay 2017, the only Chardonnay from Darling in the report’s top 24 wines.

Tim Atkin 2018 South Africa Special Report
This impressive local rating for the Groote Post Kapokberg Chardonnay 2017 followed on from an outstanding Tim Atkin 93-point rating in his 2018 South Africa Special Report. Tim Atkin is an internationally renowned wine commentator and British Master of Wine.

GROOTE POST KAPOKBERG CHARDONNAY 2017
Groote Post’s Kapokberg Vineyard Selection range, the historic estate’s flagship range, is named after the Kapokberg, the highest of the Darling Hills at 459m above sea level, where some of the estate’s best grapes are grown.  Overlooking the icy Atlantic Ocean, the prevailing summer south-easterly winds keep the vineyards cool throughout the warm summer months.

Chardonnay grapes, with small berries, from high-lying dryland low-yielding 23-year old vineyards were left hanging late into the season to become fully ripe. The juice was fermented in 300-litre French oak barrels and aged on the lees for 10 months, 25% new oak and 75% older oak.

This wine has an appealing golden straw colour and an enticing nose of toasted almonds with lashings of butter and zesty lime marmalade on the palate. An elegant chardonnay, it is well integrated with the wood and has a creamy palate and a lasting finish with toasted buttery notes.

Approximate retail price: R160.

Hildagonda Duckitt, Groote Post’s ‘Grande Dame of Cape Cuisine’, who was born at Groote Post in 1840 and spent more than half her life at this historic farm, loved to ride her horse up the Kapokberg. In one of her famous books, Hilda’s Diary of a Cape Housekeeper, published in the 1890’s, she wrote: “Standing on the hill one gets a lovely view of the country for almost one hundred miles around. Table Mountain stands due south, and from no other place have I seen so perfect a view of the “Table” and “Twelve Apostles”. On the west the wide Atlantic stretches before your gaze with only little “Dassen Island” like a speck on the horizon.”
