Groote Post introduces donkeys to protect grazing sheep from vermin at night

Groote Post, a leading agricultural producer in the Western Cape region, has introduced a new solution to protect their grazing sheep from vermin at night.

The farm has just acquired three donkeys to roam with the sheep at night and deter predators such as jackals and caracals. The decision to introduce the donkeys was inspired by Nick Pentz, the owner of Groote Post Farms, who read about the practice of using donkeys to protect sheep and thought it would be a great solution for the ongoing vermin problem on the farm.

"We've had many problems in the past months with jackals and caracals preying on our sheep at night," said Pentz. "I was intrigued by the idea of using donkeys as protectors and thought it would be a natural solution for our farm." Donkeys have a natural instinct to protect their herd from danger, and their presence alone is often enough to deter predators. The donkeys will roam with the sheep at night, creating a strong herd dynamic that will make it more difficult for predators to attack.
